Messing it up again
Performance - 2015
A durational performance exploring the outward appearance of the mother struggling to cope.
When times are bad and self-esteem is at its lowest we often try to continue to project an image to the outside world that is acceptable. With the emergence of social media, this 'front' is emphasised by statuses and filtered photographic evidence that surrounds us and feeds our own negative self-representation.
Sat on a child's chair there is a mirror with make-up and cleansing wipes laid out on a table. Proceeding to apply full make-up, a selfie is taken with a mobile phone to record an ácceptable' look. The image is then posted to social media. The face is then aggressively smeared and smudged- messing it up. Again a selfie is taken recording the aftermath but this time with a Polaroid camera. The image is then pinned on and develops as the performance continues and the cycle starts again.
